I am a firm believer in the capability of oil and natural gas to power our homes and vehicles up until the next couple of centuries. However, as the world relies more and more on fossil fuels, the possibility that we will run out of fossil fuel in the next couple of decades is very much a reality, and that possibility begs the question: Is clean energy really the future?
Everybody wants clean, renewable energy. Imagine being able to power your home using solar cells and wind turbines, and generate heat using solar and geothermal solutions. Imagine being able to travel miles and miles on an electric car that pulls like a Ferrari, without having to top its battery off for days--weeks even. Everybody wants that. But with today's technology, it is but a dream.
Why?
It's because they are too damn expensive.
Why are they too expensive? It's because manufacturers of solar panels, electric cars, and wind turbines can't ramp up production to take advantage of economies of scale. Why can't they ramp up production? Because it's too expensive that only the rich can afford them.
For clean, renewable energy to be the future, it has to get cheaper faster.
